NOAH'S ARK THROUGH THE EYES OF PAST VOLUNTEERS

Yeh it was ok, not as good as last year! xxxxxxx the other english volunteer was there, but she was painfully shy and to be honest very hard work to talk to! When i got to Heraklion I was luckily with a friend who hired a car and we then drove to Chania arriving at 8.30pm, went to Tersanas and there was no accomodation for me, so went to clinic and the german vet, Ines was unaware i was due that day, did not know where i was staying rang silke she basically was pleased but said to ask ines where to go! I then checked in a hotel coz it was too much hassle, so good job my friend had a car and was with me! Anyway turned up the next day, was working at the clinic (would have preferred souda dog shelter) as the animals were all kept in small travelling boxes and it was pitiful! I was working hard, xxxxx was hopeless to be honest, and didn't seem to have a clue really! Got told off several times from the german vets, i was taking the dogs out a couple of times, when they messed all their boxes, which was when they were desperate, and you can imagine, so they needed to stretch their little legs as they were holding going to the loo! But of course the illness may spread, when they came out through the floor, which i understand but, had to get them out to clean anyway! Made them all as comfortable as possible, was asked to help with operations then got told off for not doing things right? I have not experience which i did make clear! Then to top it all off, got shouted at to "shut the dogs up" who were barking, namely a german shepherd pup who kept tangling his lead up in the branches of the tree! I think i may have lost my temper at that point! Although under pressure, i think vets sometimes just operate more and more and just get wrapped up in that side, not thinking what the situation is after when they are in the boxes! The locals were getting very stressed and hated the barking, understandably, but there was so many animals what can you do?
Went cat catching one weekend in malia, that was ok, and i met with an english lady who runs another sanctuary in malia, she was really nice.

I had 1 day off, xxxxx just had to take days off, Silke did not take to her, but not surprising! It was nice to catch up with Silke and the Russians, but the vet was so uptight, i found it quite stressful and i am quite laid back most of the time! We were working 8am-7.00-7.30pm with no break, if i hadn't have driven, we would have had no drinks/shopping and lunch and we would have been left several times with no transport to the apts after work until we moved a week later into the Ttersanas! I did what i could to make the dogs and cats happy and content for the short time i was there, constantly changing their paper and bedding, bless them! I understand there is little option right now, but feel that although xxxx was basically a pain in the arse with the initiative of a brick wall, they really gave her a hard time ignoring her, when i turned up she admitted she had cried everyday until i got there! The vet basically apologised several times to me when she realised i was thoroughly fed up with the criticism and explained she was tired, but emotionally it was very hard! So, don't mention this to silke though as she has enough on her plate, i had a beer with her twice, and i know that the vet works bloody hard as well, tense situation all round. xxxx also turned up to no accomodation, which she found unsettling, and did not drive! I would advise volunteers they need to insist on a day off when they want one coz it will not be offered, and many can get annoyed if you take one, but that you have to insist!
